Hydrologic science was defined as a distinct interdisciplinary geoscience in 1991 through a report of the National Research Council, “Opportunities in Hydrologic Sciences.” As a result of this publications new funding program in hydrologic sciences was established at the National Science Foundation within the Division of Earth Sciences. This program nurtures a research community focused on building the science of hydrology Advances in science and technology are now laying the foundation for a more holistic intellectual framework supported by systematic measurement and data compilation at multiple time and space scales, particularly larger scales.
