Saying that the need to improve scientific reasoning skills among U.S. students “is crucial for the future of our nation,” Federal Reserve System Chairman Alan Greenspan, on September 21, testified in support of federal legislation to improve teacher training in science, mathematics, and related subjects. The National Science Education Enhancement Act (House Resolution 4272) includes provisions to provide mentoring, summer institutes, and other professional development programs for teachers. The legislation follows on a 1999 Congressional report, “Unlocking Our Future Toward a New National Science Policy.”
