Christopher Mooers [2000] has raised important issues regarding operational oceanography in his Forum piece ( Eos , March 14, 2000). I am concerned, however, that readers might be misled by some perceptions expressed in the piece. The AGU audience should understand that the U.S. Navy is well established, well positioned, and well prepared to play a major role in implementing an integrated, sustained, operational oceanographic system. After all, that's what we have been doing for over 150 years!
