Abstract On the basis of the experimental results of Lactobacillus lactis cultivation with cross‐flow filtration, the optimal operation strategy was derived making use of the Green's theorem. It was shown by computer simulation and experiments that optimal operation is superior to the case where the lactate concentration was kept constant, particularly at high cell density cultivation. The performance evaluation was made with respect to the cell productivity for the specified medium.
