A modified airlift reactor has been developed for a fed‐batch culture of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The draft tube of the proposed reactor is a net one. The reactor was coupled with a computer control system for substrate addition. Since the oxygen transfer of the new reactor is much higher than that of a conventional airlift reactor and bubble column, experimental study showed that higher cell mass was obtained by using the new reactor.
