A model of extractive ethanol fermentation within a membrane bioreactor has been constructed by using a structured, nonsegregated model of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The model has been tested by comparing actual and simulated reactor fermentations. The time‐dependent approach to steady‐state operation is well predicted. The model has also been used to examine an array of alternative operating strategies.
