The following review contains a bibliography of articles, relevant to heart failure, from the American Journal of Cardiology during 1999. Articles are grouped by topic, with a summary of each topic group. Articles of particular interest have been starred*, and seminal papers marked out with two stars**, each with individual summaries. From 928 original papers reviewed, 79 (8 . 51%) have heart failure as the main focus of the article and are presented below. There are a further nine reviews mainly taken from the ‘special symposia’ sections. Forty original articles (50.6%) are from Europe, 28 (35.4%) are from the US, with 8 (10.1%) from Japan and one each from Australia, South Africa and Hong‐Kong. One quarter of all original papers study the application of imaging modalities to left ventricular function or metabolism, with the remainder covering extremely diverse topics, reflecting the truly multi‐system pathology of heart failure.
