Pulmonary diseases have become more prevalent in general and in pregnancy. The incidence of asthma has increased by over 30%, and mortality from asthma increased by 46% during the 1980s (1). The rising incidence of tuberculosis has caused the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to draft new guidelines to prevent transmission of the disease. Drug-resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis have also dramatically increased in some areas of the country. Women with cystic fibrosis who become pregnant, face a “new” complication of pregnancy. Additionally, bronchitis and pneumonia still occur during pregnancy, and bacterial resistance may become a problem with these conditions. This bulletin will address changes that occur in respiratory physiology during pregnancy. In addition, it will review the diagnosis and management of asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, tuberculosis, and cystic fibrosis in pregnant women.
