Induction of labor consists of stimulation of uterine contractions before the spontaneous onset of labor for the purpose of accomplishing delivery. This may be done with or without ruptured fetal membranes. This Technical Bulletin summarizes current approaches used when stimulation of uterine contractions is required for labor induction. The purpose is not to endorse a particular approach but rather to describe a range of reported acceptable methods of labor induction.
