We describe here that the HXK2 gene product, isoenzyme PII of hexokinase, is located in both the nucleus and the cytoplasm of Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells. This conclusion is supported by assays of hexokinase‐specific activity in isolated nuclei from wild‐type and hxk1/hxk2 double mutant strains, by immunoblot experiments using anti‐Hxk2 antibodies and by observation of the fluorescence distribution of a Hxk2‐GFP fusion protein in cells transformed with the HXK2::gfp gene.
