Most ideas behind advances in American surgery are presented first at the Clinical Congress of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). Each year, a panel of experts is given the task of selecting from the enormous variety of research papers and clinical sessions key ideas representing the year'S advances in the subspecialties. At “What's new in surgery?” these experts present their summaries. This article presents highlights of their reports on tumors, shock and metabolism, otolaryngology, cardiothoracic surgery, orthopedics, plastic surgery, neurosurgery, urology, and gynecology and obstetrics.
