This is the first in a series of sample teaching plans for surgical patients that you can adapt to your own situation. In interviewing your patient before surgery, it is helpful to use principles of adult learning. An organized, well‐designed teaching plan will guide you in covering all of the information your patient needs to know. The Journal plans to publish a series of teaching plans for specific common procedures. Each teaching plan will be accompanied by a background article describing the surgery and related nursing care. Anatomical illustrations will be designed so you can copy them easily for use in teaching your patients.
