Many patients who undergo saphenous vein harvesting during aortocoronary bypass procedures experience saphenous vein incision site complications, such as hematoma formation. Twelve percent of the patients in this descriptive, comparative study developed hematomas in their saphenous vein incision sites. Contributing factors were age, smoking, diabetes, and intraoperative heparinization. An intraoperative nursing intervention (ie, manual descending compressions) did not decrease hematoma formation but warrants further investigation. AORN J 62 (Dec 1995) 913‐923.
