Management and care of patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) that extends into the inferior vena cava is challenging for perioperative nurses. Although prognosis for this condition is poor, excising the RCC is a palliative treatment and can offer improved quality of life for patients. Understanding the pathophysiology of RCC and the surgical technique involved in its removal increases perioperative nurses' effectiveness and enhances patient outcomes. AORN J 62 (Oct 1995) 551–555.
