The increasingly complex world of health care generates the need for staff members to learn and perform more complicated skills every day. Staff members' competency to perform in real situations is essential. Managers and educators express confusion as to which competencies need to be assessed periodically and how such decisions can be justified. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations' emphasis on data‐driven decisions precludes intuitive conclusions about competency assessment. This article describes a decision‐making model that uses data from various sources already available to the manager and educator to assist in making decisions about the frequency of competency assessment.
