There are a variety of surgical approaches to treat the symptomatic patient with a Zenker's diverticulum. Approaches to treat Zenker's diverticula include external excision (ie, diverticuletomy) with or without myotomy; diverticulopexy, an endoscopic approach; or cricopharyngeal myotomy alone. This article discusses esophageal diverticula, treatment modalities, and the perioperative care of patients with Zenker's diverticula. AORN J 73 (May 2001) 904–913.
