Pediatric patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) surgery often retain excessive fluid postoperatively, which results in negative outcomes. Modified ultrafiltration (MUF) is an innovative procedure performed at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, that is initiated immediately after CPB to reduce this fluid. This article provides a basic understanding of the MUF technique, how it is performed at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and its positive effects. AORN J 76 (Aug 2002) 300‐305.
