After many years in an administrative job, the author returned to work as a perioperative nurse. Her fears, as well as the excitement of learning new techniques and technologies, are chronicled in this article. Her experiences and “lessons learned” can be used as a guide for orienting new employees with previous OR experience. In the wake of the national shortage of perioperative nurses, hospitals may need to look to nurses who have previous but no current OR experience to fill vacancies. AORN J 76 (Nov 2002) 862–865.
