• FIRES IN THE OR can be devastating to patients, surgical team members, facilities, and communities. Every OR contains the ingredients necessary to start a fire. • EDUCATION IS THE KEY to fire prevention and preparedness. Perioperative staff members can be taught how to prevent the components of the fire triad from converging to start a fire and how to handle a fire if one occurs. • A SCENARIO IS DESCRIBED to illustrate how a fire plan and fire drill were implemented in one facility. Steps in planning a fire drill and valuable evaluation forms also are presented. AORN J 80 (July 2004) 42–54.
