• PERIOPERATIVE NURSING UNITS are experiencing a critical shortage of trained RNs, and new nursing school graduates are unlikely to enter this specialty unless they have had experience in a perioperative environment during their clinical rotations. • IN COOPERATION WITH a local hospital, a school of nursing developed a perioperative elective with a clinical component. • THE PERIOPERATIVE ELECTIVE has received strong support from faculty members and hospital staff members, and students believe they have enhanced their individual clinical experience through participation in this course.
