AbstractThe competence of healthcare professionals in treating chronic patients cannot be judged only by their technical knowledge but also by their pedagogical and communication skills. Although the clarification of a given concept requires its explanation, the importance of processes such as the attitudes, the empathic reformulation, the empowerment and the decision with its five steps - identify the problem, explore sensations, define goals, develop a strategy and finally evaluate it- must not be overlooked. In order to fully understand the philosophy of empowerment a new paradigm must be adopted: the cultural, psychological and pedagogic aptitudes of healthcare professionals have to complement their biomedical knowledge
