Background: A recent meta-analysis suggests midlife obesity increases dementia risk in late life, though the relationship with underweight is yet to be established. We therefore analysed data from a large prospective population-based study to investigate the association between body mass index (BMI) in late middle-aged and older adults and risk of incident all-cause dementia, and the role genetic risk for dementia might play. Methods: We used Cox proportional hazard models to estimate risk of all-cause dementia in 195,660 UK Biobank participants of European ancestry aged 60 years or older at baseline.
