Background: A centrally organised help-system of multiple selfdetermined support options delayed admission into a nursing home (Complete Support Network, CSN, Ihl et al. 2016). Here, the effects of a CSN on the reduction of the number and the duration of hospital stays are investigated. Methods: All patients with support of a CSN in 2016 were included. To determine number and duration of stays, clinical data of patients of the adjacent hospital of geriatric psychiatry were used. Patients with the combination of CSN and stays were compared with patients with stays or CSN only. For patients with affective disorders and organic mental disorders, separate analyses were performed. Results: 493 patients were included. Patients with participation in a CSN showed a lower number of admissions to a psychiatric hospital, t(491)1⁄412,366, p<.001, and shorter durations of stays, t(396.327)1⁄412,135, p<.001, than those without. There was no difference in the overall reduction between patients with affective disorder and patients with organic mental disorder (p<.001). Conclusions: Participation in a CSN reduced the number of stays and days in a hospital of geriatric psychiatry. The main effects could be seen as a result of having constant and trusted resource persons, a better coordination of support services, fostering sustainable positive activity and lifting isolation. To determine the transferability to other settings, further studies will be needed.
