with chronological age, sex, or total Ab plaque volume, NFT density, and tau NP density. However, an increase in overall Ab vasculature volume was associated with a significant increase in total number of intermediate and amoeboid-shaped microglia in the hippocampus. Additionally, an increase in total pretangle density correlated with a significant increase in activated microglia density in neocortical regions. Changes in activated microglia morphology alsowere associated with higher levels of pretangle pathology. Specifically, the ratio of total ramified microglia/total activated microglia and the ratio of hippocampal ramified microglia/hippocampal activated microglia decreased as pretangle density increased. Conclusions:Similar to humans, elderly chimpanzees with AD-like pathology exhibit changes in microglia density and morphology.
