2013. The 19 normal cognition participants had a much higher percentage with post-graduate education (89.5% versus 44.3%, p1⁄4.001), higher vocabulary raw score as measured in 1991-92 (59 versus 47, p1⁄4.005), greater hippocampal volume (73 versus 30, p1⁄4.016), faster gait speed in 1992-94 (68 versus 25, p1⁄4.001), higher DSST (79 versus 36, p1⁄4.005), higher MMSE in 1992-94 (90 versus 43, p1⁄4.001) and greater number of blocks walked in 1992-94 (68 versus 24, p1⁄4.0004). Conclusions:Few individuals survived to older ages free of dementia and disability. Measures of brain reserve, cognition, brain neurodegeneration, and physical activity and functioning measured up to 20 years prior to the end of the study were determinants for survival to age 93 free of dementia.
