efficacy of the program in the VA setting (PLI E-VA). Methods: Study sites will be adult day centers that contract with the San Francisco VA. We will enroll 20 individuals with dementia at each site, prioritizing Veterans, and randomly assign them to Group 1 or Group 2 (total 5 sites, 100 participants). Group 1 will participate in PLI E at least 2 days/week for 4 months while Group 2 participates in usual activities at the center. Then the groups will switch, and Group 2 will participate in PLI E at least 2 days/week for 4 months while Group 1 returns to usual activities. Assessments will be performed at baseline, 4 months and 8 months. Our co-primary outcomes will be change in physical performance (Short Physical Performance Battery), cognitive function (Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale – cognitive subscale), and quality of life (Quality of Life in Alzheimer’s Disease). We also will examine the impact of the intervention on caregiver burden (Caregiver Burden Intentory). Results:The study protocol has been approved, and recruitment is scheduled to begin in April 2015. Conclusions: The PLI E program uses a novel, integrative approach to simultaneously provide physical, mental and social stimulation in people with dementia. If the program proves successful in the PLI E-VA study, it could serve as a model for strategies to enhance functional status and quality of life in millions of people living with dementia.
