ALS as a multisystem disorder involving cognitive and emotional as well as motor deficits. The aim of the current study was to investigate emotional perception abilities in Korean ALS patients. Methods: Twenty-four patients with ALS and 24 ageand sex-matched healthy controls completed neuropsychological tests and facial emotional recognition tasks, consisted of facial expressions for seven basic emotions (happy, sad, angry, disgust, fear, surprise, neutral). Results:ALS patients performed significantly worse than control subjects on facial emotional perception. Eight of the 24 patients (33%) scored below the 95% confidence interval of controls in recognizing facial emotions. Conclusions: Emotional perception deficits were seen in Korean ALS patients, in particular with emotional facial expressions. These findings help us understand the spectrum of cognitive dysfunction into comprehensive neuropsychological dysfunction.
