accepted criteria, using immunohistochemistry. Results: Neuritic plaques consistent with CERAD B or C where observed in 25 normal and in 49 demented individuals. Socio-demographic and pathological factors were investigated in a case-controlstudy. Cognitively-normal individuals had higher educational levels, a higher proportion of males, fewer cases with Braak and Braak stage higher than III and fewer cases of cerebrovascular disease. More cases with CERAD C were detected in demented than in cognitivelynormal individuals, but the difference was not significant. Conclusions: Although a high burden of neuritic plaques were found in cognitively normal cases, the finding of high Braak and Braak stages and/or cerebrovascular disease were rare. These findings are in line with reports correlating cognitive decline with the progression of cytoskeletal and vascular changes in the brain.
