in India. Life expectancy is increasing and the level of health care awareness is also. To know the prevalence of dementia; psychosocial correlation and various risk factors of dementia in North west India. Methods: A community survey was done in urban area of northwestern part of India in population of 60 years and above using cluster sampling. 1376 people screened with mini mental state examination scale. All those surveyed cut off point 23 at or below were evaluated further and those with confirmed cognitive & functional impairment were assigned diagnosis according to DSM IV criteria. Identified cases were categorized by ICD 10 criteria. 10% of those screened as negative were evaluated at each stage. Results: Prevalence of dementia was 29.8 per 1000 (94% CI 26.4-42.7) AD was the most common type 48% followed by vascular dementia 36% & 8% of case were due to cause such as infection, tumor & trauma. Family history of dementia was a risk factor for AD and history of Hypertension was a risk factor for vascular dementia. Conclusions: Dementia is an important health problem of elderly in Indian population. To prevent the dementia early screening for identification of risk factors is required.
