complaint scale was also related to poorer performance in the MMSE. Memory complaints were present in the illiterate individuals 75 years who scored under the 15 percentile and for those who had studied from 1-4 years. For these subjects, history of hypertension was related to the higher scores in the test. Having a job at the moment was related to higher scores in the MMSE in the group of individuals 75 years with 5 years of schooling. Conclusions: Many sociodemographic and health variables can influence MMSE performance, with different impact depending on age and schooling. Clinicians should pay attention to the variables that might be associated to a worse MMSE performance.
