disease (N 75, 7%) and cognitive impairment secondary to clinical disease (N 62, 6%) were the main reasons. Rivastigmine was the cholinesterase asked in 73% of the cases, donepezil in 6%, galantamine in 1% and other drugs in 20%. There was a significant association between years of professional activity of the physicians and correctness of the requests ( 2 9.30; p .003). The group of physicians who graduated later had more granted requests. Conclusions: The public health strategy using the expert-review of prescription highlighted the low rate of rational prescription in AD. The majority of requests were not according to the guidelines. There is an urgent need to develop interventions for improving the rational use of cholinesterase inhibitors and the adherence to the national guidelines at the Brazilian health public system.
