process. Objective: Will the introduction of the dementia program change the costs for the disease e.g. home care and the admission of patients with dementia to nursing homes? Methods: The aim is to analyse the prescription habits of drugs and to compare it with the use of drugs in Sweden. The costs of dementia care within primaryand specialist-care units will be evaluated. We are also conducting a study in the community to analyse care and costs for people with dementia in the area. Results: The yearly cost for dementia in Kalmar community is on average 145 million SEK (17 million USD). Conclusions: The cost per demented in the Kalmar Community is proportionally lower than in the rest of the country, suggesting an effect of the dementia program.
