decline in MCI is likely underestimated because steeper decline would trigger reclassification as having Alzheimer’s Disease. (Only the most recent diagnosis was available.) This study illustrates the impact of separating aging effects from both dying effects and birth cohort effects. When separated from birth cohort and dying effects, the rate of cognitive decline in non-demented elderly is smaller than the rate estimated with other methods.
