embryonic stem cells. For a successful transplantation, sufficient percentage of photoreceptors is to be generated in vitro. Our approach to address this problem is to activate photoreceptor development and differentiation from the ES cells/neural stem cells/precursors (mouse PN1 retinal cells) in vivo by manipulating intrinsic as well as extrinsic factors. MicroRNAs are important in vivo regulators. The stage-specific or preferentially expressed miRNAs may play unique roles in the fine-tuning of spatial and temporal sequences in retinal development.
