expressed in the dorso-lateral (DL) as well as dorso-medial (DM) regions of chicken hippocampus. Previous tract tracing studies had suggested that the DM region of the chicken hippocampus contains the characteristics of mammalian CA fields as well as the subiculum. We found the expression of ETV1 (expressed in mammalian CA fields and subiculum) in the DM region of the chicken hippocampus. We also identified the neurogenic zone that gives rise to the neurons of the developing chicken hippocampus. We found the migration pattern of these neurons to be predominantly radial unlike tangential and radial migration pattern of mouse hippocampal neurons. Our comprehensive analysis of gene expression has helped establish the structural homology between the mammalian and avian hippocampus. Functional characterization of the genes found in this study is likely to provide valuable information on mechanisms regulating hippocampus development of birds and could be extrapolated to mammalian hippocampus development as well.
