merase chain reaction, and electrophysiological recording. Compared with the control group, the number of synaptic puncta significantly increased (P < 0.01) as showing by immunostaining or RT-PCR. The spontaneous synaptic currents (SSCs) on SCGNs were also remarkably increased (P < 0.01). Additionally, the SSCs could be blocked by the specific nicotinic receptors blocker, but not by the glutamate receptor antagonist. These observations clearly demonstrated the increased and functional synapses in the coculture system, strongly suggesting novel ‘‘hybrid’’ synaptogenesis formed between the somatic neurons and the automatic neurons; acetylcholine and nicotinic receptor may play pivotal roles in mediating these processes.
