This is associated with a reduction in the size of the lateral reticular nucleus and the external cuneate nucleus, and an absence of Phox2b+ neurons in both the nucleus of the solitary tract and the area postrema. In addition, the inferior olivary nucleus is not formed. Our analysis shows that Olig3 defines a dorsal part of the germinal zone in the hindbrain and that it is essential for the specification of distinct subsets of hindbrain neurons.
