the progenitor population. In human, NF1 mutation predisposes to benign, incurable peripheral nerve tumors (neurofibromas). We prospectively identified EGFR+; p75+ cells by FACS analysis of human neurofibromas. These data demonstrate that an EGFR+ neural progenitor exists in developing peripheral nerve, and is amplified in Nf1 mutants. We hypothesize that expansion of a progenitor population in Nf1 mutant peripheral nerves contributes to tumorigenesis in NF1.
