Highlights• Gentle, dynamic touch plays a central role in many perinatal care strategies. • C-tactile afferents, unmyelinated mechanoreceptors, respond optimally to low force and velocity touch. • CT targeted produced a significant decrease in infants’ heart-rates and increase in their blood oxygenation levels. • Static touch did not generate significant change in heart-rate or blood oxygenation levels. • Findings from this study provide support for the hypothesis that CTs signal the affective quality of nurturing touch.
