BACKGROUND Smoking is known to be a major cardiovascular risk factor. As one of the markers of arteriosclerosis, pulse wave velocity (PWV) is widely used in clinical practice. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of smoking cessation on improving PWV. METHODS Subjects were 23 patients who had smoked over more than ten cigarettes per day and joined smoking cessation programs. We examined PWV, amounts of taking cigarettes, heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure at baseline and after three months of smoking cessation programs. PWV was measured brachial‐ankle PWV (baPWV) using an oscillometric method (VP 1000, Colin Co., Komaki, Japan). We investigated individual improvement of baPWV using paired t test. Spearman's rank correlation coefficient was calculated to clarify the dose dependency between smoking amounts and improvement of baPWV. RESULTS 15 subjects achieved complete smoking cessation. Mean taking cigarettes decreased from 21.8 to 1.8 per day. After smoking cessation baPWV was significantly decreased (P<0.05), whereas systolic, diastolic pressure or heart rate were not changed. The improvement of baPWV correlated with smoking amounts. (R=0.53, P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS After smoking cessation baPWV was significantly decreased. These findings imply the beneficial effects of smoking cessation on arteriosclerosis even in three months course.
