Charles Rice and Ralf Bartenschlager, together with Michael Sofia, are the recipients of the 2016 Lasker∼DeBakey Clinical Award. Their discoveries led to the development of a system to study the replication of hepatitis C virus, which causes a chronic and lethal disease in humans, and the use of this system to develop drugs that cure the illness.
