(Cell 133, 852–863; May 30, 2008)In this study, we presented an analysis of mutant phenotypes associated with the Drosophila neurogenic gene big brain (bib). It has come to our attention that the bib1 mutant stock utilized in this study carries an unlinked mutation that accounts for some of the Notch-related findings originally attributed to bib. Due to this problem, some conclusions of the original study are no longer supported, and therefore we have decided to retract the paper. We are extremely grateful to Sarah Bray and Thomas Klein for alerting us to the presence of an unlinked mutation affecting Notch in some bib mutant stocks, and we regret any confusion that might have arisen from our initial study.
