The aim of this paper is to present changes in diagnostic criteria of alcohol use disorders and some consequences concerning change to therapy and pharmacotherapy approaches. The presented DSM-5 classification features the diagnostic category “Substance Use Disorder”, which combines DSM-IV “substance abuse” and “substance dependence” as a single disorder. The definition of alcohol dependence as a set of behavioural and physical symptoms in people who consume large amounts of alcohol, including alcohol withdrawal syndrome, tolerance and craving, has not changed.According to the new version of classification the ICD-11, diagnosis of “Disorders due to use of alcohol” includes alcohol intoxication, harmful use, dependence syndrome, withdrawal syndrome and alcohol-induced mental and behavioural disorders. As regards studies on the effectiveness of treatment, issues such as the understanding of addiction mechanisms, basic assumptions and the aims pursued are now being redefined and new treatment strategies are being sought including, presented in this paper, modular psychotherapy utilizing personal resources available and therapy based on harm reduction strategies as well as new pharmacological treatment proposals
