ResumenObjetivoidentificar la percepción que tienen los médicos especialistas en Ginecología y Obstetricia, Cirugía General, Medicina Interna y Pediatría respecto al especialista en Medicina Familiar.Métodosestudio descriptivo, transversal y observacional. Se diseñó un instrumento para identificar la percepción de los médicos especialistas de diversas áreas acerca de la Medicina Familiar a través de 13 preguntas abiertas y cerradas. Se efectuó una narrativa explícita y demostrativa de los resultados obtenidos. Se entrevistó a 50 médicos especialistas de dos hospitales del Estado de México, y se aplicó un cuestionario acerca de la percepción que tenían sobre la Medicina Familiar como especialidad médica.Resultadosse identificaron tres factores: la mayoría de los médicos no tuvo contacto con la Medicina Familiar durante el pregrado; la mayoría de los médicos pensaba que el médico familiar se dedicaba a la medicina preventiva; y a ninguno de los entrevistados les hubiera gustado especializarse en Medicina Familiar.Conclusionesmientras la formación del pregrado no cambie, la percepción que manifiestan otros especialistas sobre la Medicina Familiar tampoco cambiará.SummaryObjectiveto identify perception that Gynecology and Obstetrics, General Surgery, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics specialists have regarding a Family Medicine specialist.Methodsdescriptive, cross-sectional and observational study. To identify the perception of medical specialists from different areas about Family Medicine it was designed an instrument through 13 open and closed questions. A explicitly and demonstrative narrative was made from the obtained results. 50 medical specialists from two hospitals in the State of Mexico were interviewed, and a questionnaire about the perception they had about Family Medicine as a medical specialty was applied.Resultsthree factors were identified: most of the physicians had no contact with Family Medicine during undergraduate; most of them thought that family physicians were dedicated to preventive medicine; and none of those interviewed would have preferred to specialize in Family Medicine.Conclusionswhile the undergraduate training does not change, the perception that other specialists have on Family Medicine will not change either
