ResumenObjetivodeterminar la salud periodontal en mujeres embarazadas.Métodosestudio observacional, transversal y analítico. Se realizó en 88 gestantes a quienes se les efectuaba control prenatal. Se aplicó una encuesta de factores sociodemográficos, hábito tabáquico, trimestre de gestación, conocimiento sobre salud oral y asistencia a servicio dental. Fue evaluada la placa dentobacteriana y la enfermedad periodontal, con índice de Löe y Silness e índice de Russel.Resultados27 mujeres (31%) refirieron cepillado dental tres o más veces al día; 45 (51%) consultaron al dentista durante el embarazo; 63 (72%) recibieron orientación sobre “cómo evitar caries dental y gingivitis”. Los principales motivos de consulta al dentista fueron dolor en 21 (23.9%) y enfermedad dental en 20 (22.7%). La prevalencia de placa dentobacteriana y enfermedad periodontal fue de 74 y 65%, respectivamente. No se demostró asociación de enfermedad periodontal y placa dentobacteriana respecto a los factores de conocimiento en salud oral, ocupación y escolaridad.Conclusiónla enfermedad periodontal y placa dentobacteriana mostraron similar prevalencia a la encontrada en otros estudios. La mujer embarazada consulta al estomatólogo en caso de urgencia y desconoce la importancia de la participación del dentista en el control prenatal.SummaryObjectiveto determine the periodontal health in pregnant women.Methodsobservational, cross-sectional and analytical study. It was done in 88 pregnant women who had prenatal care control. A survey was applied where elements such as socio-demographic, smoking habit, quarter of gestation, knowledge about oral health and dental assisting were collected. Plaque and periodontal disease were evaluated with Löe and Silness index and Russel index.Results27 women (31%) referred tooth brushing three or more times a day. 45 (51%) consulted the dentist during pregnancy; 63 (72%) received guidance on how to prevent dental caries and gingivitis. The main reasons for consultation to the dentist were pain in 21 (23.9%) and a dental disease in 20 (22.7%). Prevalence of plaque and periodontal disease plaque was 74 and 65%, respectively. There is no association of periodontal disease and plaque in regards to oral health knowledge, employment and education.Conclusionperiodontal disease and plaque showed similar prevalence to that found in other studies. Pregnant woman consult a dentist in case of emergency and does not know the importance of consulting the dentist during prenatal care
