The UCLA Mental Retardation Research Center was dedicated in 1969 as a multidisciplinary research organization. Its objectives are to develop new knowledge concerning the understanding and treatment of Mental Retardation and related aspects of human development as well as provide an environment for the training of new investigators. The multidisciplinary research conducted by investigators and trainees is supported by a wide range of service cores providing state of the art techniques in molecular biology, cell culture, cell biology, image processing, confocal microscopy, computer and statistical support. Current programs in biomedical and behavioral research bring together basic and clinical scientists to study how genetic, hormonal and environmental factors affect preand postnatal development. This research utilizes physiological, cellular, molecular and behavioral approaches conducted both in animals and humans. Clinical research in retarded populations include self-injurious behavior, communication in children with autism and down syndrome, pediatric epilepsy as well as neurobehavioral effects of mild head injury in children.
