One e x a m p l e o f t h i s e f f e c t I s t h a t t h e c e r e b r a l c o r t e x o f r a t s t h a t h a v e b e e n r e a r e d i n an ' e n r i c h e d ' e n v i r o n m e n t i s h e a v i e r t h a n t h a t o f r a t s r e a r e d i n a s t a n d a r d ( l a b o r a t o r y ) e n v i r o n m e n t . As t h e r e s e e m s t o b e a r e l a t i o n s h i p b e t w e e n n o r a d r e n a l i n e and e n v i r o n m e n t a l l y i n d u c e d c h a n g e s i n t h e c e r e b r a l c o r t e x , we e x a m i n e d t h e r o l e o f n o r a d r e n a l i n e i n t h e e n h a n c e d g r o w t h o f t h e c e r e b r a l c o r t e x o f r a t s r e a r e d i n an ' e n r i c h e d ' e n v i r o n m e n t . When c o m p a r e d w i t h t h e a p p r o p r i a t e c o n t r o l s , we f o u n d t h a t n e o n a t a l s u b c u t a n e o u s i n j e c t i o n s o f 6 h y d r o x y d o p n m i n e (60HDA) c a u s e d a 70% r e d u c t i o n i n t h e c o r t i c a l n o r a d r e n a l i n e c o n t e n t and a r e d u c t i o n i n c o r t i c a l w e i g h t a s w e l l a s b o d y w e i g h t . Th e i n c r e a s e i n c o r t i c a l w e i g h t due t o t h e e n r i c h e d e n v i r o n m e n t was l a r g e r f o r t h e c o n t r o l t h a n f o r t h e d r u g t r e a t e d r a t s , b u t t h i s d i f f e r e n c e c o u l d b e a t t r i b u t e d t o e f f e c t s on t h e i r b o d y w e i g h t . 60HDA i n j e c t e d d i r e c t l y i n t o t h e l a t e r a l v e n t r i c l e s o f 32 d a y o l d r a t s c a u s e d a n 80% r e d u c t i o n i n t h e c o r t i c : i l n o r a d r e n a l i n e c o n t e n t and a s i g n i f i c a n t r e d u c t i o n i n c e r e b r a l c o r t i c a l w e i g h t b u t n o t o f b o d y w e i g h t . Th e i n c r e a s e i n c o r t i c a l w e i g h t d u e t o e x p e r i e n c e i n t h e e n r i c h e d e n v i r o n m e n t was s i m i l a r i n d r u g t r e a t e d and s a l i n e t r e a t e d r a t s .
