Cerebellum produces two distinct forms of plasminogen activator

In the v r e s e n t s tudy p h y s i c a l and b e h a v i o r a l development o f r a t s born to dams t h a t r e c e i v e d MSG (10 mg/kg) in t he d r i n k i n g wa te r f o r the second and t h i r d week o f g e s t a t i o n were i n v e s t i g a t e d . P r e n a t a l MSG exposure r e s u l t e d in s i g n i f i c a n t l y lower b i r t h weigh t which soon gave v l a c e to a t r a n s i e n t j u v e n i l e o b e s i t y which t ended to d i s a p p e a r by t h r e e months o f age. The MSG exoosed o f f s p r i n g were l e s s a c t i v e in the o~en f i e l d than c o n t r o l s a t 35 days o f age. At two months o f age the MSG animals showed s i g n i f i c a n t b e h a v i o r d e f i c i t in a comolex cho ice d i s c r i m i n a t i o n t a sk but no d e f i c i t in a s imple "go no-go" b l a c k w h i t e d i s c r i m i n a t i o n t a s k . MSG exposed and c o n t r o l s u b j e c t s showed no d i f f e r e n c e in t he l e a r n i n g o f shock avoidance in a s h u t t l e box. While the e a r l y o b e s i t y found he re was s i m i l a r to t h a t r e p o r t e d a f t e r p o s t n a t a l i n j e c t i o n of MSG, he re the o b e s i t y was t r a n s i e n t , t h e r e was no s t u n t i n g o f gene ra l growth and h i s t o l o g i c a l examina t ion f a i l e d to show any r e t i n a l damage.
