Polyclonal antibodies against neurofilament (NFP68), GFAP, Neurin and monoclonal antibodies against glia-processes (XlXDI,XXIXBI) were used for the study of neuron and glia differentiation within the developing and adult fish spinal cord. NFP68 reactivity appears in primary sensory neurons at 60 h post fertilization (pf), and in motoneurons at 72 h pf. Neurin is present in neuronal and glial cells at 60 h pf, and GFAP reactivity appears in radial glial cells at 60 h pf. XIXD| and XXIXBI reactivity is present in all embryonic spinal cells at 84 h pf, in adults however, it appears only in radial and longitudinal glial processes. Conclusions: I) Neurin is an early and potent marker for embryonic glial cells and for spinal neurons; 2) with regard to the markers mentioned above, the primary sensory system and the radial glial cells differentiate prior to the spinal motor system; 3) neurons and glial cells have a common marker in embryonic stages, which in adults is only expressed in glial processes.
