Studies on the perinatal development of drug and neurotranshitter receptors: The use of in vitro autoradiographic techniques

Immunohistochemistry applied to the analysis of peptidergic neuronal systems during development can bring specific informations on their organization and maturation. We will present results on immunohistochemical analysis both at the light and ultrastructural level, of several populations of peptidergic neurons involved in neuroendocrine regulations in the human fetal and neonate hypothalamus. Special emphasis will be given to the description and analysis of the neurons producing LH-RH, somatostatin, somatocrinin, oxytocin, vasopressin, and pro-opiomelanocortin. These results will be used to illustrate and discuss the contribution of immunohistochemistry to the understanding of the ontogenesis of specific neuronal cell populations. For each cell population, we will describe the time of appearance in development, the subcellular distribution of immunoreactive material, the morphological changes in zyxwvutsrqponmlkjihgfedcbaZYXWVUTSRQPONMLKJIHGFEDCBA relation to maturationa steps especially the establishinent of connections with other neuronal systems or with portal vessels in median eminence, and the comparison with organization and aspect of mature systems in adult. The interest and limitation of immunohistochemistry for the study of the development of peptidergic neurons, as compared to other approachs including radioimmunoassay will be discussed.
